Risks and Costs of Interactions between Plants and Hummingbirds

چکیده

– Hummingbirds can act as mutualists by transporting pollen grains among flowers, but they may also act as vectors of several organisms which could affect the interaction with their plants. The transmission of such antagonists by hummingbirds searching for nectar rewards may end up in sexually transmitted diseases, pollen consumption and depletion of nectar rewards. Therefore, the supposedly harmonious, mutualistic interaction between plants and hummingbirds can be defeated by the transmission of antagonistic organisms along with pollen grains. The present paper is an attempt to contribute to this recent line of inquiry which focuses on the implications of third level species on the plant-hummingbird interaction. Accepted 5 January 2004. Keys words: Antagonists, hummingbird-plant interaction, flower mites, fungal pathogens, nectar thieves.

A New Approach to Project Risk Responses Selection with Inter-dependent Risks

Risks are natural and inherent characteristics of major projects. Risks are usually considered independently in analysis of risk responses. However, most risks are dependent on each other and dependent risks are rare in the real world. This paper proposes a model for proper risk response selection from the responses portfolio with the purpose of optimization of defined criteria for projects. Th...

Hummingbird responses to gender-biased nectar production: are nectar biases maintained by natural or sexual selection?

Pollinators mediate the evolution of secondary floral traits through both natural and sexual selection. Gender-biased nectar, for example, could be maintained by one or both, depending on the interactions between plants and pollinators. Here, I investigate pollinator responses to gender-biased nectar using the dichogamous herb Chrysothemis friedrichsthaliana (Gesneriaceae) which produces more n...

Project Portfolio Risk Response Selection Using Bayesian Belief Networks

Risk identification, impact assessment, and response planning constitute three building blocks of project risk management. Correspondingly, three types of interactions could be envisioned between risks, between impacts of several risks on a portfolio component, and between several responses. While the interdependency of risks is a well-recognized issue, the other two types of interactions remai...

Time-Calibrated Phylogenies of Hummingbirds and Hummingbird-Pollinated Plants Reject a Hypothesis of Diffuse Co-Evolution

Neotropical ecosystems house levels of species diversity that are unmatched by any other region on Earth. One hypothesis to explain this celebrated diversity invokes a model of biotic interactions in which interspecific interactions drive diversification of two (or more) lineages. When the impact of the interaction on diversification is reciprocal, diversification of the lineages should be cont...
